Not everything of importance is obvious or easily apparent at first sight. Here we delve into fascinating facts, theories and speculations. Some may prove to be dubious, others may prove to be ahead of their time. The aim is to encourage you to think "out of the box".

Rain, rivers, seas and oceans, sap and blood, our world is full of water. 75% of the surface of the earth is covered by water. It is essential to life on earth, including human existence. We could only survive for about a week if deprived of water. It is a key component of plants and animals. Apparently our brains are 75% water, our blood 83% water and even our bones are 25% water.

We drink it, cook with it, wash with it, one way or another we consume vast quantities of it. Although we encounter it on an everyday basis, there is still much about the properties and behaviour of water that is unknown or open to debate. It is so familiar most of us don't give a thought to this amazing substance, but a few people have made water their most passionate interest and subject of study.

Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese scientist, was intrigued by the healing potential of water, and the idea that it could hold 'memories'. He was wondering whether there could be any physical evidence for this concept, and how it might be discovered. When he was reminded, quite by chance, that each snowflake is unique in its appearance, he had the idea of photographing frozen water crystals, and set about developing a special technique to make this possible.

The photographs revealed significant differences in the crystallisation of water from different sources. While pure spring water tended to form beautifully shaped crystals, heavily treated tap water often failed to form any crystals at all. Led on by curiosity, his research progressed to exposing bottles of water to different kinds of music, which seemed to have a big effect on the type of crystals formed. What Masaru describes as "violent heavy metal music" resulted in fragmented and misshapen crystals, while the music of famous classical composers, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin produced well formed crystals that correlated with the brightness, or delicacy of the music.

Then he took what he describes as the "illogical" step of writing thoughts on paper and wrapping them round bottles of water. According to Masaru the photographic results revealed a direct effect of thought on water. He describes how water exposed to positive expressions created attractive well formed crystals, but water exposed to negative expressions formed either deformed crystals or no crystals at all.

Masaru took this as a demonstration of the power of words:

"The vibration of good words has a positive effect on our world, whereas the vibration from negative words has the power to destroy"

One phrase in particular seemed to have a profound effect on both the water, and on Masaru. He describes how when water was exposed to the words love and gratitude it was as if the water had rejoiced and celebrated by creating a flower in bloom.  It formed the most perfect and beautiful crystals, and observing the result of this experiment changed Masaru's life.

He felt so strongly that mankind could benefit from the implications of his research that he wanted to tell the world. Unable to find a publisher prepared to take on a book about his work, Masaru decided to publish a book about his research with water crystals himself. Despite the reticence of publishers, the story of his experiments spread quickly and the book became a best seller. The Hidden Messages in Water by Masaru Emoto.

Of course not everyone would agree with Masaru's research methods or all of the conclusions he draws from his results.

Whether they have been subsequently discredited or generally accepted, very few truly innovative ideas have been enthusiastically welcomed at first by the majority of established, recognised experts.

Masaru's experiments and the message he took from his results are certainly fascinating enough to be worth thinking about - especially as our brains are apparently 75% water!

What if one of the basic building blocks of life on earth does respond to the quality of our thoughts?
What experiments might you want to try out yourself to explore Masaru's premise?
What changes would you consider making if you took his photographs to demonstrate the power of thought and words on the material world?
What possibilities could that open up?
